Why salt and minerals

Know-how for farmers

Most plant feed does not contain enough sodium and chlorine, so ruminants need extra. Sodium maintains water balance, osmotic pressure and acid-base balance, and takes part in glucose and amino acid transport and in nerve signalling.

30 g

of salt a day is what one cow needs for maintenance.

+20 g

for every 10 litres of milk. Needs rise in the warmer part of the year.

÷10

Sheep and goats need about ten times less salt than cows.

Symptoms

Signs of salt deficiency

  1. 1Licking and chewing objects
  2. 2Loss of appetite
  3. 3Exhausted appearance
  4. 4Lower milk yield and weight loss
  5. 5Trembling and loss of coordination
  6. 6Weakness and irregular heartbeat

In order of increasing severity.

Result

Healthier herd, more profitable production

With salt and minerals always within reach, animals are healthier and use their feed better, and milk and meat production is higher and more economical.

Salt is the only part of the diet that can be fed at will. Hang the block in the barn or put it on pasture, and the animal takes what it needs.

The role of minerals and vitamins

What each element in Solimax blocks does in the animal's body.

Fe

Iron (Fe)

A vital element; prevents anaemia by raising blood haemoglobin.

Ca

Calcium (Ca)

Essential for building bone tissue.

P

Phosphorus (P)

Helps build bones and synthesise ATP.

Se

Selenium (Se)

Prevents infertility and wasting of skeletal muscle, supports female reproductive function and raises milk yield.

Co

Cobalt (Co)

Needed for vitamin B12 synthesis; prevents pernicious anaemia.

Na

Sodium (Na)

The most important cation in the body; maintains the osmotic pressure of extracellular fluid and is vital for muscle, heart and nerve function.

Zn

Zinc (Zn)

Deficiency shows as stunted growth, changes to the skin, ears and hooves, diarrhoea and poor feed utilisation.

Mn

Manganese (Mn)

Found in all body tissues; supports reproduction and bone development.

Mg

Magnesium (Mg)

Mostly found in bones and teeth; deficiency causes tetany (muscle cramps).

Cu

Copper (Cu)

Deficiency causes anaemia, stunted growth, bone disorders, loss of hair and wool colour, lower fertility, heart weakness and digestive disorders.

A

Vitamin A

Deficiency causes night blindness, fertility problems, abortions, stillbirths and stunted growth.

D3

Vitamin D3

Deficiency disturbs calcium and phosphorus metabolism and causes rickets, stunted growth and stiff legs.

E

Vitamin E

Improves fertility, reduces stress and supports healthy muscle and nervous system development.
